BRIEF HISTORY OF PROFESSOR KEVIN NGOZI NWOGU

Born on the 19th of August 1953, Professor Kevin Ngozi Nwogu hails from Umuohie-Ukwu Village, Eziama in Ngor- Okpala Local Government Area of Imo State.

Prof. Nwogu had his early education at Methodist Primary School Oshodi, Lagos and St Finbarr’s Catholic Primary School, Okpala, Imo State. He had his secondary education at Ngor- Okpala High School, Umuneke–Ngor, Imo state and also attended the Bishop Shanahan Teachers College, orlu, Imo State where he obtained the Pivotal Teachers Certificate.

Prof. Nwogu holds a Second Class (Hons) Upper Division degree in English/Education obtained from University of Ile-Ife and a Master’s degree in English and Curriculum Studies from University of Jos. He also holds a PhD degree in Linguistics with specialization in Text and Discourse Analysis and particular emphasis in the Lnguage of Science and Technology obtained from the University of Aston in Birmingham, United Kingdom in 1989.

Prof. Nwogu started his career as an English language teacher at Obube Secondary School Ulakwo, Imo State from 1973-1974 before proceeding for undergraduate studies at University of Ile-Ife. On completion of his undergraduate studies, Prof. Nwogu served in the NYSC scheme at the Government Girl’s Secondary School, kwoi, Kaduna state as an English language lecturer with the Federal College of Education, Yola in 1981.

Prof. Nwogu joined the services of the Federal University of Technology, Yola as an Assistant Lecturer in 1983 and roses steadily in his career to the rank of Professor in 1997. In 2003, Prof. Nwogu disengaged from the services of the Federal University of Technology, Yola and joined the services of the Federal University Ndufu-Alike Ikwo as professor of English language. While at the Federal University of Technology, Yola, Prof. Nwogu served in several administrative positions prominent amongst which were as Director of Academic Planning and Quality Assurance, Dean of Student Affairs, two-time Dean of School of Management and Information Technology, Head, Department of Information Technology, Head, Department of English and General Studies. Prof. Nwogu also served in various Senate and Council Committees. He was a member of the University’s Senate and also served on the Governing Council.

Prof. Nwogu joined the services of the Federal University Ndufu-Alike Ikwo in 2013 as Professor of English language. Since joining FUNAI, Prof. Nwogu has served in number of committees. He is currently the Director of Academic Planning of the university.

Prof. Nwogu’s research interest is in Functional Linguistics, with emphasis in Discourse Analysis, Pragmatics and Systematic Functional Grammar. He is also interested in the application of Functional Linguistics Models to the study of English for Specific Purposes, particularly academic writing in the fields of Science and Technology.

Prof. Kevin Ngozi Nwogu has contributed immensely to knowledge in his field. His PhD thesis titled “Discourse Variation In Medical Texts: Schema Theme and Cohesion in Professional and Journalist Accounts is considered a seminal work in his field. He is arguably, the first Nigerian linguist to earn a PhD in linguistics with specialization in the language of science and technology. He is arguably, the first Nigerian Linguist to earn a PhD in Linguistics with specialization in the Language of Science and Technology. He is widely published in local and international journals and has a number of books to his credit. Prominent amongst his books is “Technical Report Writing: A Guide to Writing-up Research in Science, Engineering, Medicine and Technology.”

Prof. Kevin Nwogu is a recipient of the Common Wealth Academic Staff Award and a member of the Linguistics Association of Nigeria as well as member of other professional associations in his discipline.

Prof. Kevin Ngozi Nwogu is married with children.
