AE-FUNAI VC INAUGURATES SUG ELECTORAL COMMITTEE

…Issues Terms of Reference

The Vice-Chancellor of Alex-Ekwueme Federal University Ndufu-Alike, Ebonyi State,        Professor Chinedum Nwajiuba, yesterday, inaugurated a 16-man electoral committee charged with the responsibility of organizing the maiden Students Union Government election of the university.

Inaugurating the committee, the Vice-Chancellor who was represented by his deputy,     Professor Sunday Elom noted that SUG election was a serious and sensitive matter that requires tact and transparency to avoid crisis.

“SUG election is a serious matter. It is as serious as a state election. It requires transparency and should not be manipulated or rigged to favour any person or group if you want to avoid crisis”, he noted.

He further cautioned the committee against undue interference in the election, adding: “The election at stake is purely a students’ matter”, and urged them to ensure it was free, fair and credible to ensure that a transparent and functional Union was put in place to assist the Management in developing the university.

The Vice-Chancellor further handed down six key terms of reference to the electoral body that include: Formulation of electoral guidelines, Preparation of a comprehensive list of voters who must be duly registered students with certified payment of school fees, Liaising with the Police and Department State Services to screen the contestants to rid them of cultists, Creation of polling booths in each faculty for efficient voting process, Liaising with  INEC to acquire ballot boxes, and to organize a free, fair and credible election.

Committee members for the maiden SUG election were drawn from all the faculties, and comprises of both staff and students. They include the Dean of Student Affairs, Dr Charles Okolie as Chairman, Engr. Mamah Stanley Chinedu, representing the Faculty of Engineering and Technology, Dr. Otu  Akam Otu, Faculty of Management and Social Sciences, Dr. Anthony Oko Isu, Faculty of Agriculture, Mr. Kenneth Oparaji, Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences, Mr. John Onwe, Faculty of Education and Dr. Ema Abraham, Faculty of Science, Dr. Chinyere Nkama, Faculty of Humanities, and Major Mgbebu Onwe (Rtd.), Chief Security Officer.

Other members of the committee are, Agu Princewill, representing the students of the Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences, Nnanna Okereke, Faculty of Management and Social Sciences, Ogbolafor Maxwell, Faculty of Engineering and Technology, Gideon Ezeali, Faculty of Science, Timothy Nwode, Faculty of Agriculture, Charles Nwoba, Faculty of Humanities and Onaji Stephen, Faculty of Education.
