FUNAI ELECTS NEW DEANS
The Federal University Ndufu Alike Ikwo has elected new Deans of Faculties.
This came as a result of the Senate’s approval that Deans’ elections shall be held on the 7th month of every two years following the expiration of the running tenure.
It is therefore against this backdrop that the elections which were conducted in the various faculties under the supervision of the Vice Chancellor, Professor Chinedum Nwajiuba took place in a free and fair atmosphere.
Addressing the voters in the various faculties before the commencement of voting, the Vice Chancellor, Professor Chinedum Nwajiuba stated that the new system of electing Faculty Deans affords the eligible contestants the opportunity to bring their expertise to bear and as a way of promoting the University’s policies and programmes.
At the end of the keen contest which was overseen by the Vice Chancellor, the Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences produced Professor Robert Nneli as the new dean.
The Faculty of Engineering retuned the interim Dean, Professor Mathew Edoga unopposed. The same applied for the Faculty of Management and Social Sciences where Professor Philip Omoke, the Interim Dean was returned unopposed as the substantive dean.
The Faculty of Humanities produced the first female dean in the university in the person of Professor Gloria Emezue.
However, the election in the Faculty of Sciences was dramatic as the two contestants Professors Michael Onuu and F. X. O. Ugodulunwa tied in the first ballot with 41 votes apiece, but Professor Ugodulunwa carried the day after the second ballot.
In their separate remarks, the newly elected Deans expressed their gratitude to the members of
their respective Faculties for counting them worthy to lead and said that the already existing peace found in the faculties would give the platform to lead. They further promised unbiased leadership to achieve the desired goal.
The Vice Chancellor was accompanied by the newly appointed Deputy Vice Chancellor Professor Elom, the University Registrar, Mr Gabriel O. Chukwu, the Chairperson of FUNAI University Women Associaton (FUNAI-WA), Dr. Mrs. Chinyere Nwajiuba
