FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS FOR PROSPECTIVE INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS

Prospective international students seeking admission into Alex Ekwueme University Ndufu-Alike Ikwo (AE-FUNAI) as undergraduate or postgraduate students should read the FAQ.

  • Who is classified as an international/foreign student at AE-FUNAI?

A foreign/international student is defined as a prospective student who is a citizen of a country other than Nigeria. He/She must be in possession of an International Passport of another country.

  • What is the application process for admission?

The prospective international student completes an application form, attaches required documents and materials, and sends the application to the University Admission Unit, Registry Department. Students are encouraged to apply online and to email scanned documents to the Admissions Office via admissions@funai.edu.ng. Applications into undergraduate and postgraduate programmes are usually in line with the University academic calendar and the guidelines of relevant government ministries and agencies. It is therefore important to visit the university website periodically for such updates. We have commenced processing applications from international students wishing to enrol for a programme in the 2018/2019 academic session. The session will commence 3rd of October.

  • Am I eligible to apply?

Eligibility to apply varies with departments and programmes. The eligibility details for undergraduate and postgraduate programmes are outlined on the webpage of various departments of the University. For the postgraduate programmes, relevant information is specified in the postgraduate school webpage. Applicants are advised that no application for postgraduate studies will be processed without original or certified copies of transcripts of academic results sent to the relevant department.

  • How can I Know if AE-FUNAI offers my course?

Courses are listed according to departments on the university website. You need to visit the relevant web page of your prospective department to find out information about your proposed programme before applying to study at AE-FUNAI.

  • What academic support do freshmen have?

All AE-FUNAI students have academic advisers to help them navigate through the university and graduate on time. He course advisers will help you in the transition as you settle into University, and make sure that you make the most of your time studying at AE-FUNAI. All undergraduate students are required to take a zero credit English Language enhancement course. The course provides an excellent introduction to university-level reading and writing skills and is also a way to enhance your future employability.

  • Can I apply if my previous programme did not follow the CGPA System?

Yes, you are encouraged to apply. Applicants should, however, make sure that all certificates have been translated to the English language. The translated versions, as well as the original version, should be submitted to the relevant department for consideration. All applications will be considered based on its merits, regardless of the previous school system.

  • Do I need a Visa to study in Nigeria as an international student?

Before entry into Nigeria, an admitted student must possess the requisite visa to validate his length/purpose of stay in the country. Nigerian Visas are obtained in the Countries where prospective students are domiciled or the nearest Nigerian Mission nearest to their Countries of residence. ECOWAS member countries require no visa to study in Nigeria but will require to go through the immigration authorities for clearance with their national or ECOWAS passports. Admitted foreign Nationals must also procure the CERPAC (This is the acronym for Combined Expatriate Residence Permit and Aliens Card). In doing that you must purchase a CR (Concessionary) form for $200. It is meant for Missionaries, Students, Non-ECOWAS African Nationals and Cameroonians.   • Do I need to write a TOEFL or IELTS exam?

There is no requirement for Test for English language proficiency (TOEFL) or equivalent test to study at AE-FUNAI. However, the University requires that applicants to academic programmes should have a credit in English Language at the O/L GCE or equivalent examination.

  • Are there any age restrictions when applying to a degree programme at AE-FUNAI?

Prospective students applying for the undergraduate programmes should be a minimum of 16 years.  There are no maximum age restrictions.

  • I have not yet graduated. Can I still apply for a Masters programme?

Transcripts and proof of completion are required for every application to be processed. This implies that you must complete your undergraduate or MSc programme before you can apply into our MSc or PhD programmes respectively.

  • Must I submit the required documents in person at AE-FUNAI?

International students are required to submit all required documents online or send documents to the Centre for Internationalisation, Linkages, Advancement and Global Ranking via registered mail. However, registration must be done in person upon admission. The correspondence address is specified below.

  • What is the cost of Accommodation?

Students are expected to pay N30,000 accommodation fees per annum with a precautionary ‘caution fee’ of N20, 000 reimbursable at the end of the academic session.

  • Is there guaranteed accommodation on campus for international students?

Yes, accommodation is provided for all international students on campus.

  • What healthcare support is provided to students?

The University has a health clinic on campus that provides basic medical health services to students and members of staff. In addition to providing basic health needs, the University clinic ensures adequate referral support /services.  The clinic is committed to helping members of the University community maintain healthy lives and restoring wellness.
